Roger Hayden (2006). Continuity and change: evangelical Calvinism among eighteenth-century Baptist ministers trained at Bristol Academy, 1690-1791. Baptist Historical Society, Didcot.
Continuity and change is a thought-provoking study of the development of evangelical Calvinism from 1690 to 1791. A key centre for this growth was the Broadmead Baptist Church in Bristol, under the successive leadership of Bernard Foskett, Hugh Evans and Caleb Evans. Adopting the 1689 Confession of Faith as their doctrinal standard, this influential group encouraged a covenant theology based on Christian experience, developed congregational hymn-singing, introduced ministerial education strategies and took part in home mission. This ground-breaking work highlights the need for Baptist historians to review their understanding of eighteenth century Particular Baptists, moving their focus away from London to the pivotal role played by the Broadmead church.
